Prevenient Grace Means of Grace Reign of God
censure, where shall he appear who has a whole train of idle actions ? Now every word and action is idle which is not done with a view proposed by our Creator in our very existence here. This interpretation is corroborated by St. Paul's well known passage in his epistle to the Ephesians, iv. 2Q, 30 : " Let no corrupt communication proceed out of your mouth, but such as is good to the use of edifying, that it may minister grace to the hearers :" and " Grieve not the holy Spirit, whereby ye are sealed unto the day of re demption." If any ask what we mean by idle words, my answer is, the same that the apostle means by "corrupt communication ;" words that are not edifying or beneficial, such as minister no grace to the hearers. In this manner, then, we must not converse or speak, but preserve an invariable view to the great end of our being, the glory of God, and the good of others. Now if no conversation can be vindicated, which is not sanctified, consecrated, if I may so say ; if no subject, however light, be ex empted from some moral tendency ; I ask
