2o\' For Relievers Rejoicing.
3 By our bosom -foe beset,
Taken in the fowler's net,
Passion's unresisting prey,
Oft within the toils we lay :
Sleeping on the brink of sin,
Tophet gaped to take us in ;
Mercy to our rescue flew,
Broke the snare, and brought us through.
4 Here, as in the lion's den,
Undevour'd we still remain ;
Pass secure the watery flood,
Hanging on the arm of God :
Here we raise our voices higher,
Shout in the refiner's fire ;
Clap our hands amidst the flame,
Glory give to Jesu's name.
HYMN 239. cm.
1 1-JA1L ! Father, Son, and Holy Ghost,
1 ■■- One God, in Persons Three!
Of Thee we make our joyful boast,
Our songs we make of Thee.
2 Thou neither canst be felt nor seen ;
Thou art a Spirit pure ;
Thou from eternity hast been,
And always shalt endure.
3 Present alike in every place,
Thy Godhead we adore ;
Beyond the bounds of time and space,
Thou dwell'st for evermore.
4 In wisdom infinite thou art,
Thine eye doth all things see ;
And every thought of every heart
Is fully known to thee.
For Believers Rejoicing. 23 1
5 Whate'er thou wilt, in earth below
Thou dost, in heaven above :
But chiefly we rejoice to know
The' almighty God of Love.
6 Thou lov'st whate'er thy hands have made ;
Thy goodness we rehearse,
In shining characters display'd
Throughout our universe.
7 Mercy, with love, and endless grace,
O'er all thy works doth reign ;
But mostly thou delight 'st to bless
Thy favourite creature Man.
8 Wherefore, let every creature give
To thee the praise design 'd :
But, chiefly, Lord, the thanks receive,
The hearts of all mankind.
HYMN 240. l. m.
On the Attributes of God.
OGOD, thou bottomless abyss,
Thee to perfection who can know ?
O height immense ! What words suffice
Thy countless attributes to show ?
Unfathomable depths thou art ;
O plunge me in thy mercy's sea !
Void of true wisdom is my heart ;
With love embrace and cover me !
While thee, all- infinite, I set
By faith before my ravish 'd eye,
My weakness bends beneath the weight ;
O'erpower'd I sink, I faint, T die!
